Description

In this beautiful original woodblock print from August 1899, taken from vol. 5 n. 10 of the famous literary magazine Bungei Kurabu (文芸倶楽部), a female warrior armed with a naginata (薙刀) leads a magnificent white horse by the halter.

The work was made by Takeuchi Keishu (武内桂舟), one of the most talented students of the famous Tsukiyoka Yoshitoshi (月岡芳年), as the frontispiece of the novel “Castles in the Air” (画そらごと) by the writer Nakarai Tosui (半井桃水).

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), produced by the Hakubunkan (博文館) publishing house, despite the right signs of aging and in particular small spots and a halo on the right margin, is in fair condition.
