Description
Refined polychrome woodblock print of large vertical format made by the artist Migita Toshihide (右田年英) and depicting a young woman holding in her right hand a Hagoita (羽子板), the wooden paddle used in Hanetsuki (羽根突き), a kind of badminton, one of the Japanese traditional New Year’s games.
The work, produced in January 1901 by the publisher Akiyama Buemon (秋山武右衛門), owner of Kokkeido (滑稽堂), is taken from the series “Twelve Figures of Beauties” (美人十二姿) and is entitled “Mutsubizuki” (むつび月), or “The Month of Love”, one of the ways in which the month of January was traditionally referred to.
The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging, is in very good condition.
