Description

Refined original woodblock print of vertical large oban (大判) format, taken from the series “Cherry-blossom Viewing Spots in Edo” (江戸花見尽) made in the 1820s by the famous artist Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞) and produced by the publisher Yamamotoya Heikichi (山本屋平吉), owner of Eikyudo (栄久堂).

The work, depicting the dressing of a girl, is entitled “Moto Hachiman: Single Blossoms, Double Blossoms” (元八幡 一重八重). In the top-right inset a detail of the Tomigaoka Hachiman Shrine (富賀岡八幡宮), in the Koto ward (江東区) of today’s Tokyo.

The print, despite the obvious signs of aging including some tiny holes and slight paper thinning, is in fair general condition.
